What is Acupuncture?

Traditional acupuncture is a healthcare system based on ancient principles which go back over two thousand years. It looks at pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance. The overall aim of acupuncture treatment, then, is to restore the body's equilibrium.

By inserting ultra-fine sterile needles into specific acupuncture points, a traditional acupuncturist seeks to restore balance and trigger the body's natural healing response

What can Acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture can treat a wide range of conditions; the British Acupuncture Council is based in London and provides information for over 40 conditions that can be treated with acupuncture – please see their website at or contact them on 020 8735 0400

What you can expect from a session?

Our acupuncturist will use a number of different methods to get a complete picture of your health and lifestyle, including taking a full medical history, taking your pulses, and looking at your tongue. Based on this information, he will make a diagnosis and put together your personal treatment plan. You will be made comfortable on the adjustable treatment couch for the acupuncture session, or seated if you prefer.

Small, sterile needles are gently inserted into various treatment points on the skin. The needles will stay in place for approximately 20-30 minutes.

After use,the needles are discarded and disposed of safely, they are never re-used. Dr Shen will stay with you for the duration of the session, and can answer any questions you may have, before, during and following your treatment.

Who is Acupuncture for?

Many people come to acupuncture for help with specific symptoms, or to relieve specific pains like osteoarthritis of the knee. Some use acupuncture because they feel generally unwell but have no obvious diagnosis. Others choose acupuncture simply to enhance their feeling of wellbeing. Acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages, and can also be used safely and effectively alongside conventional medicine.

What's involved?

Before your acupuncture session there are several things you should bear in mind:

• many commonly used acupuncture points are located on the lower arms and legs, so it is helpful to wear clothing that allows easy access to these areas
• try not to have your treatment on an empty stomach or straight after a heavy meal
• do let our practitioner know if you have never had acupuncture before, as he will take extra time to explain what happens and ensure you understand and are comfortable with the process.

How long is a session?

You should allow a full hour for a consultation and treatment.

At the very first consultation, our acupuncturist will ask some questions about your current symptoms and your medical history, as well as such things as your sleeping patterns, your appetite and digestion, emotional health, and any medication taken.

Registration with the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) requires the study of an accredited acupuncture course. These are degree level courses taught at accredited institutions.

The BAcC is the leading regulator of acupuncture in the UK with over 3,000 fully qualified members.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy:

Provided by The British CBT & Counselling Service,

About The British CBT & Counselling Service:

All members of The British CBT & Counselling Service are Doctors of Clinical Psychology, Counselling Psychologists or CBT Psychotherapists (MSc / Postgraduate Diploma). All Psychologists hold a practicing certificate with The British Psychological Society and are registered with The Health Professions Council which monitors and regulates the practice of Psychologists. All CBT Psychotherapists are accredited to practice by The British Association of Cognitive and Behavioural Psychotherapies. All Psychologists have spent between seven and nine years training to enable people to overcome their emotional difficulties via CBT Counselling. In addition to practicing privately, many hold (or have recently held) senior positions in the NHS.

What is CBT?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave.

CBT cannot remove your problems, but can help you manage them in a more positive way. It encourages you to examine how your actions can affect how you think and feel. Talking and changing your behaviour can change how you think (cognitive) and what you do (behaviour). This can make you feel better about life.

When is CBT used?

CBT has been shown to be particularly helpful at tackling problems such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders and drug misuse. Unlike other types of talking treatments, such as psychotherapy, CBT deals with your current problems, rather than focusing on issues from your past. It looks for practical ways to improve your state of mind on a daily basis. CBT can also be used to treat people with long-term health conditions, such as arthritis and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). CBT cannot cure the physical symptoms of these health conditions, but can help people cope better with them.

How CBT works:

CBT works by helping you make sense of overwhelming problems by breaking them down into smaller parts. Your thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, often trapping you in a negative spiral. CBT helps you stop these negative cycles. It aims to break down factors that are making you feel bad, anxious or scared so that they are more manageable. It can show you how to change these negative patterns to improve the way you feel.

CBT sessions:

If CBT is recommended, you will usually have a session with a therapist once a week or once every two weeks. Some problems may require more intensive intervention and a therapist may spend several hours at your home to encourage you to face your fears. Overall, the number of sessions you need will depend on your individual problems and objectives. Treatment usually lasts six weeks to six months.

Pros and cons of CBT:

There are a number of advantages and disadvantages associated with CBT. Research has shown that CBT can be as effective as medicine in treating depression and other mental health problems. Compared with other talking therapies, CBT can also be completed over a relatively short period of time. However, to benefit from CBT, you need to commit yourself to the process. A therapist can help and advise you, but they cannot make your problems go away without your full co-operation. Also, due to the structured nature of CBT it may not be suitable for people with more complex mental health needs or learning difficulties.
